Essential Self-care for Moms

2

I grew up knowing about self-care because of my mother. We moved from Puerto Rico to Orlando, Florida when I was just four years old. While we made many friends that became family throughout the years our closet relatives were about four hours away. Not having family nearby made it difficult for my mom to have “ME” time. Yet, she made it happen and I believe the way she loved and cared for herself helped her be the best mother she could be to my brother and me.

Whether it was baking and decorating cakes, making soaps and candles, or taking a trip to the spa she always made time for the things that she enjoyed. Not long after I became a mother I realized why my mom practiced self-care and on many occasions made it a point to include me. She was setting a positive example for me…the future mother in me. Whenever I feel overwhelmed with stress and anxiety I think of my mom and how little acts of self-love and care can turn a bad moment or day around. Sometimes it just takes a couple of minutes to disconnect and recharge. Everybody’s schedules and interests are different but if there’s something we all have in common regardless of our lifestyles is that EACH and EVERY mother matters. So how do you make yourself a priority when money is tight and your schedule is chaotic?

Here are some ways you can practice self-care from home that will cost you little to no money

REST & RELAX
-Set up a spa-like environment at home by lighting candles or diffusing essential oils.
-Enjoy a glass of champagne or wine.
-Play your favorite soft tunes.
-Create a DIY Face mask using items from your fridge and pantry.
-Treat yourself to a simple Mani + Pedi.
-Disconnect from social media and browse through magazines or read a book.

GET CRAFTY
There’s something about working on arts and crafts that I find so soothing. Creating from scratch allows our imagination to run wild, just like a child, and express ourselves in a creative way. Scroll through Pinterest for some DIY inspiration. You may even surprise yourself and find a new hobby. Many homemade crafts make great home decor pieces or personalized gifts.

RECHARGE
Go down for a nap when your little one does. My three year old only takes a nap during a long car ride or on the weekends. For that weekend nap, instead of taking care of a chore while he sleeps like I usually would I listen to my body and if I feel tired I lay down too. Just resting my mind and body even if it’s for a portion of my son’s nap time helps me feel energized for when he wakes up and the rest of the day. Naps are magical, especially once you become a mom!

CONNECT WITH MOTHER NATURE
Fresh air is the best medicine. I’ve created the habit of stepping outside for five minutes each hour throughout my workday. Feeling the warm sun and light breeze, even when Florida’s humidity strikes, really calms me down when stress and anxiety try to sneak up on me. Taking a stroll around my neighborhood also helps to unwind and appreciate the beauty around me like all the green found in trees and plants as well as the community animals.
